April marks that start of a series of exercise activities at parks across the city. Some recur weekly or monthly. Whether you’re comfortable walking, jogging, or running there’s an event for you!

When: Sunday, April 3, 2022 — 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. Where: Shofuso Japanese and Garden Event partner: Fairmount Park Conservancy

Join in and learn about birds from a bird lover and science communicator. Along the way you’ll hear about the wonderful birds who call our city home and those birds that only make pit stops in Philadelphia on their migration!   Look for more information and updates on the event Facebook page.

When: Wednesdays in April (6, 13, 20, 27) —  5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. Where: Various locations throughout Fairmount Park Event partner: Fairmount Park Conservancy

Training for Broad Street? Just want to get to know Fairmount Park’s trails a bit better? Training on Trails runs, led by Barry Lewis and avid runners from the Conservancy staff, will be 3-7 miles in length and run at an approximately 10-11 minute mile pace. Did you know that there are over 100 species of trees in the Fairmount Park system? Take a hike to meet a few! Join arborist Robert Heiskell for a tree huggers hike through the FDR Park. Learn to identify trees usually found in Philly’s urban forest from the leaves and the bark. You’ll finish the tour a bit more empowered to care about Philly’s trees. Join our Environmental Educators at Pennypack Environmental Center to see some beautiful local wildlife. Binoculars are provided by staff, so come equipped with your curiosity and a notebook! Look for more information and updates on the event Facebook page.

When: Saturday, April 23, 2022 — 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Where: Morris Park / Papa Playground

Join Parks & Rec’s Environmental Educators from Cobbs Creek Community Environmental Center for a Saturday morning walk. We’ll explore Morris Park and look for early spring ephemeral wildflowers. Read more event details.

When: Saturday, April 23, 2022 — 10 a.m. – 12:30 a.m. Where: West Fairmount Park Event partner: Fairmount Park Conservancy

Hike through the history of Fairmount Park this April. This nearly four mile loop winds through tunnels and alongside tracks from the trolley system last operational in 1946. See ticket prices, purchase tickets, and view the COVID policy and additional event information.

When: Friday, April 29 — 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. Where: Wissahickon Environmental Center

Join Parks & Rec’s Environmental Educators from the Wissahickon Environmental Center for the City Nature Challenge . Help us to record, using iNaturalist, all of the species we find as we witness the biodiversity that has found its way to our ponds. Life cycles will be in full swing and it’s possible that we’ll find seeds sprouting, grasses growing, insects buzzing, amphibians singing, and more as the daytime blends into night.
