RAVENSWOOD, W.Va. (WV News) — After a two-year hiatus, the Harvest in The Wood festival is coming back with a bang.

For three years the festival was a staple in Ravenswood. Then the pandemic hit. It was set to reappear in 2021, but COVID yet again reared its ugly head. Finally in 2022, the event will take place and promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Harvest in The Wood director Denise Toler is excited for this year’s events. Due to the city water project, the location has been changed from Sycamore Street to the area around city hall.

“Vendors will be set up as well as the Beer Garden and other activities in the grassy and brick areas around the city building,” Toler said. “It’s going to be crazy, but in a good way.”

There will be train and carriage rides as well as a 60-foot Ferris wheel which will be set up on Sycamore Street by Little Caesars on Friday and Saturday. All rides will be $1 each.

Toler’s hope is that the Ravenswood bridge and the high school football field can be seen from the top of the Ferris wheel, making for great photo opportunities.

Entertainment for the event will be “top notch,” according to Toler.

“Every day we have great entertainment,” she said.

Beginning on Thursday, at 5:30 p.m. will be local favorites the River Rats followed by Bobby Taylor, a nationally recognized fiddle player, and Johnny Staats. Another local band, Riptown Riots, will play from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Hometown boy Luke Sadeky will start off the Friday evening music with a break for the Ravenswood High School homecoming game. At 9 p.m. is the Johnny Staats Project and then at 10:15 is another favorite, West Virginia-based Davisson Brothers.

Saturday’s lineup includes Professor Bubble Maker at 10 a.m. followed by Bobby Taylor and Johnny Staats. At 1:30 p.m. will be Solid Gold Saturday Night Band from New York with Unbreakable at 4:45 p.m. Goldtown will begin at 6:30 p.m. leading the way to Chayce Bekham, 2021 American Idol winner, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Fireworks will then be let off prior to 3rd Rock taking the stage at 10:15 p.m.

“We will be Chayce Beckham’s first travel stop,” Toler said. “He is from Kentucky, but we are his first travel stop on tour ever.”

Sunday’s entertainment includes Johnny Staats Bluegrass Band at 1 p.m. followed by Dauzat St. Marie at 2:30 p.m. The festival finishes out with the Brewing Company from 3:45 pm. to 5 p.m.

Other events and activities include a cornhole tournament, pumpkin pie bake off, chili cookoff, Anything on Wheels vehicle show, and a Power Wheels Demolition Derby for children 3-7 years old.

First, second and third place will be awarded in the cornhole tournament.

The pumpkin pie bake off will have a first, second and third place winner along with a people’s choice award.

“For the chili cook off we are doing spiciest, best flavor, best vegetarian, best wild game and people’s choice winner,” Toler said.

All awards for the cornhole tournament, pumpkin pie bake off and chili cook off are being made by JCDC Woodworks.

Following the Anything on Wheels vehicle show, any motorcycle who wishes to, can participate in the Guardians of the Children ride for an additional fee.

All registration forms for events can be found on the City of Ravenswood website at https://www.cityofravenswood.com/fairsandfestivals/page/registration-forms-harvest-events

The Kid’s Zone, sponsored by The Ravenswood Fund, will be $3 per child per day. Activities include a bungee run, a Velcro wall, a whack-a-mole, a wrecking ball, 65-foot obstacle course, a wipeout course, and bounce house activities for smaller children.

David Stone with Stone Road Vineyard from Elizabeth, West Virginia, will be the wine representative for the beer garden. Sprigs will be the craft beer vendor with craft and domestic beer available.

On Thursday evening there will be a TV in the beer garden for those wanting to watch the WVU game.

The Ravenswood Volunteer Fire Department will be on hand to run the first aid station.

Trolley services will be available to take patrons from the parking areas to the festival area, free of charge.

The Ravenswood High School homecoming parade will intertwine with the Harvest in The Wood Festival. The parade will begin at 1:15 p.m. on Friday and the theme is Halloween Movies.

Fred Taylor will be the grand marshal followed by the all-state football members from 1974 to present day.

On Saturday, The Pilot Club will be sponsoring a “take a pie in the face” for Pilot Club.

“They are raising money by “pieing” people,” Toler said. “All proceeds will go to benefit their dental program and car seat program.”

Harvest in The Wood was Toler’s vision from the very beginning. She had always imagined a festival in Ravenswood that would allow the community to get involved and also bring in others from surrounding areas.

“It really is a good time for everyone,” Toler said.
