Summer is upon us and that calls for a top of the range camping chair. We put eight camping chairs through their paces to find chairs that won’t leave you blown over by a gust of wind or with a sore back.

Among those we tested were a mixture of moon chairs and folding camping chairs from Regatta, Trespass and Vango. We tested them on everything from durability to ease of assembly and, most importantly, comfort.

Prices and availability last checked: 4 April 2022.

Vango's Micro Steel Tall Camping Chair looks almost identical to the pricier Helinox chair. Both are lightweight and portable, but which did we find easier to put up and take down?

Log in or join Which? to find out.

An uncomfortable camping chair can ruin a camping trip. To find the most comfortable chair we had eight volunteers ranging from 8st 5lbs to 18st 3lbs in weight, and between 5ft 3in and 6ft 3in tall to sit on each chair and rate them.

A good camping chair should be quick and easy to put up and take down. We took each chair out of its bag, assembled it and then dissembled it again. We noted any issues we found and penalised bags that were overly tricky to work with.

Nobody wants a wobbly chair that's easily blown over. For stability, we asked our volunteers to reach across their body to pick up an object on either side of the chair. And for exiting, we asked them simply to get out of the chair and note any issues they found.

Lugging a chair around is often the worst part of a camping trip or festival, along with carrying your tent around. We've penalised chairs with more bulk and weight so you know which chairs are the easiest to carry.

We ran a series of tests to test for different aspects of durability.
