CDA Presents The Art and Science of Dentistry is back in San Francisco Sept. 8-10 with more than 165 in-person continuing education courses for dentists and their teams. Headlining speakers include Penny Hatzimanolakis, DMD, on implant hygiene, Mario Romero, DDS, in restorative dentistry and John Kalmar, DMD, PhD, in oral pathology, while other internationally recognized speakers will present courses on hot topics such as dental sleep medicine, crown lengthening and digital dentures.
Six speakers will make their first appearance at CDA Presents, including Effie Habsha, BSc, DDS, founder of Women in Dentistry. Dr. Habsha will present a hands-on veneers workshop with a virtual lecture component.
Among other highlights, The Santa Fe Group will lead a panel presentation on special needs in dentistry, and a CDA-hosted workshop on immunization — in collaboration with the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry — will have its debut.
Advance registration is required for all courses. Workshops have a fee; lectures are free. Most courses will be held in-person at the Moscone South Convention Center, but some courses have a live webinar component as a prerequisite. Read on for a few selected course highlights of each day at CDA Presents. Headlining speakers typically present several courses on at least two days of the convention, so attendees may choose to register for a course on a day that better suits their schedule. Penny Hatzimanolakis, DMD, educator at the University of British Columbia, will present four courses in San Francisco, including the workshop “Implant Maintenance: What’s in Your Cassette?” on Thursday. Attendees will learn how to identify the implant and prosthetic components by working with simulated implants and learn the different instruments and modalities to evaluate and debride the implant at varying levels of health.
The three-hour workshop is offered twice Thursday — at 8:30 a.m. and again at 1 p.m. Dr. Hatzimanolakis will also teach two different lectures Friday.
Stavros Pelekanos, DDS, assistant professor in prosthodontics at the Dental School, University of Athens, Greece, will present two courses Thursday.
“Different Treatment Modalities With Implants in the Esthetic Zone: What Is New?” at 9:30 a.m. aims to analyze and categorize different treatment modalities for successful implant restorations in the esthetic zone with a focus on the methodology and treatment workflow in these cases.
Among other learning outcomes, attendees should understand the rationale of immediate versus delayed implant placement/loading and the rationale of different surgical treatments, especially soft-tissue enhancement and guided bone regeneration.
In his second lecture, “Treatment Planning with Implants in the Edentulous Jaw” at 1:30 p.m., Dr. Pelekanos will focus on the methodology and treatment workflow in demanding clinical cases and present guidelines to achieve optimum results. Attendees will understand the rationale of fixed versus removable and “retrievable” treatment modalities as well as when pink esthetics is needed and what are its limitations.
Jon Suzuki, DDS, PhD, MBA, has four courses lined up in San Francisco, including “Crown Lengthening and Periodontal Flap Surgery for the Restorative Dentist.”
Crown lengthening surgery is a frequently required procedure for optimum patient treatment planning in restorative and prosthetic dentistry. Dr. Suzuki’s course is in a combination format of lecture via webinar and hands-on workshop with completion of the webinar as a prerequisite for attending the on-site workshop.
The webinar will cover indications for crown lengthening surgery with potential extension to open flap surgeries. Principles of flap design, osseous contouring and suture will be addressed along with complications and post-operation instructions. Workshop registrants will be enrolled automatically in the webinar. The workshop utilizing pig jaws will take place 8:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday.
Suzuki will teach three additional courses in periodontics Thursday and Friday.
Mario Romero, DDS, makes his first appearance at CDA Presents with four lectures in restorative dentistry.
In his Friday-morning lecture “Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Procedures in Everyday Practice: The ‘No Drill’ Techniques,” Dr. Romero will teach attendees how to select the best bleaching protocol for each patient and effectively treat the single dark tooth, as well as how micro-abrasion can help correct treatment modality for white spot lesions.
The lecture is a recommended prerequisite to Romero’s workshop “Composite Veneers (Layered Technique)” at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
Romero will also present “The Highly Aesthetic Restorative Practice” at 3 p.m. Thursday and a posterior composites workshop Saturday afternoon.
Dental team members who attend “Mind Your Body” at 11:30 a.m. Friday will learn the causes and solutions to distressing conditions in the back, shoulders and neck along with chairside exercises to help them sit, stand and work without pain. Juli Kagan, RDH, MEd, a professor of health care education and certified lyengar yoga teacher, will demonstrate how to achieve a natural pelvic position and neutral spinal alignment when seated. She will also teach attendees at least five exercises that can be performed in the dental chair.
John Kalmar, DMD, PhD, professor of oral and maxillofacial pathology at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, will teach six courses in San Francisco, including “Practical Oral Pathology” and “Odontogenic Cysts and Tumors” on Saturday.
Dr. Kalmar’s lecture on practical oral pathology will use case-based examples in an interactive format to help dentists and dental team members detect, diagnosis and manage the oral and perioral conditions they likely encounter in their daily practice. Kalmar will review the clinical features of abnormalities and lesions with an emphasis on creating a sound differential diagnosis. Attendees will also learn how to review the radiography of common and significant jaw lesions and discuss the indications for CBCT. The lecture starts at 8 a.m.
“Odontogenic Cysts and Tumors” at 11 a.m. will provide an overview of selected cysts and neoplasms associated with the dental lamina and tooth formation and describe the recommended follow-up protocols for them. Kalmar will use case-based examples to help dentists recognize the clinical settings and radiographic findings of common and significant tumors.
International lecturer Joyce Bassett, DDS, will present four courses in esthetics, including two on Saturday.
In “Composite Artistry: Mastering Posterior Anterior Direct Composite Creating Undetectable Restorations,” Dr. Bassett will discuss and demonstrate techniques to create morphologically and see different dimensions of color in direct esthetic restorations. Among other outcomes, attendees will learn how to achieve a predictable composite restoration following the stratification of opacities and how to layer the different opacities of composite, opaquing, tinting, finishing and surface texture.
Earlier on Saturday, Bassett will present “Secrets to Case Acceptance and Longevity.” She also teaches two courses Friday.
