WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) announced the Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) Appropriations package that includes over $250 million in investments they are fighting to deliver for 130 local projects across New Mexico.
The Senate Appropriations Committee released a nearly $1.7 trillion fiscal year 2023 Appropriations package, which includes $653 billion in non-defense discretionary spending, a 10.1% increase over fiscal year 2022, $850 billion in defense discretionary spending, an 8.7% increase over fiscal year 2022, and $118.7 billion for VA medical care, a 22% increase over fiscal year 2022.
“The Appropriations process gives us the opportunity to take community-based approaches to solving local issues. Whether it’s supplying six fire engines to different fire departments, investing $2 million in efforts to break the cycle of crime in Albuquerque, or providing almost $2 million for emergency responses in Las Cruces, we are fighting to improve the lives of every New Mexican. I’m proud to continue working hand-in-hand with communities, in every corner of New Mexico, to develop these investments, and I will continue fighting to get this package across the finish line,” said Heinrich, a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and Chair of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies.
“I was proud to work alongside Senator Heinrich to advance funding for critical local projects that will make a real impact in the lives of New Mexicans, once it is passed by the Senate and signed into law,” said Luján. “These projects will uplift New Mexico communities by restoring and maintaining our acequias, expanding access to affordable housing, modernizing transportation, creating opportunities for our kids, and strengthening healthcare.”
The package will make significant investments in communities around the country, fund critical programs supporting America’s middle class, protect our nation’s veterans, and invest in our national security while making new investments in science and research, health care, climate change adaptation and mitigation, mental health, and resources to combat the opioid epidemic among other priorities.
The package includes important policy priorities that will help American families with the rising costs of living as a result of inflation. It will help families put food on the table, make rent and mortgage payments, and reduce the cost of childcare and higher education.
