With the state primary now just two days away, Republican gubernatorial candidate B.J. Penn was busy this afternoon, making a late push for votes.
HONOLULU (KITV4) -- With the Hawaii primary now just two days away, Republican gubernatorial candidate B.J. Penn was busy this afternoon, making a late push for votes.
Penn and his supporters were riding a trolley at Sandy Beach in east Oahu, urging people to get out and vote.
Despite going against experienced politicians like former Lieutenant governor Duke Aiona and Honolulu city councilperson Heidi Tsuniyoshi, the former MMA champ is sounding confident about Saturday.
"I just want to tell all the voters if you're not happy where things are with government, and you want to make a change, you know, step up and vote for BJ Penn in the Republican Primary," says Penn. "I will win the general election. I resonate past the politics, and step up and vote for me. I'm here for the people."
Hawaii born movie star Jason Momoa today endorsed Penn and pro surfer Makua Rothman who's running for Honolulu City Council.
On Instagram, Momoa posted "We need more homegrown braddahs and sistahs who aren't career politicians, and won't be bullied or bought out by special interest groups."
And while some Republicans have been skeptical of Hawaii's vote-by-mail system, Penn tells us a lot of his supporters have been taking advantage of it, saying it's easy to use. They're calling the system perfect for Hawaii.
As for Penn himself, he says he's planning on casting his own vote in person on Saturday.
